The Most Heavenly Place on Earth

My plans were foiled, though, when I noticed, tucked in the same strip, buried behind the foreboding sign of a local eye doctor's office, a secondhand book store. I took one look at my mom and gushed, "Can I please go to the book store? I have my cell phone." To which, of course, she responded "Yes."

I raced down the sidewalk and walked into the open door of the bookstore. It was as quaint as a corner book shop ought to be, a place that belongs in a small country town at the end of a winding, tree-lined road, or a little hole-in-the-wall in a bustling city, frequented by true lovers of literature. I love the sight of books stacked on shelves, burgeoning against book ends. I love the smell of their yellowed pages, the character of their weathered covers.

The dimly-lit shop had an eerie atmosphere: every conceivable surface was covered with towering stacks of books. Shelves lined every wall, they marched in a disorderly array across the floor, crammed so closely together that there was barely standing room in between them. There wasn't a salesperson in sight.

"Hello?" I uttered tentatively, moving forward with -I admit -a death grip on my purse.

An elderly woman peeked up from behind a stack of books. "Well, hi, there! How can I help you?"

I spent the next hour perusing familiar titles and conversing easily with the kind saleswoman. She was highly amused by my reverence at the sight of so many reasonably-priced books. "Obviously, you love literature." If I would have had three more hours to spend in the bookshop, I would have. If I had three hundred dollars to spend in the bookshop, I would have.

I had had a bit of a stressful day that day, but I felt the stress melting away as I flipped through the pages of a volume of poetry. I might be an extrovert usually, but I was completely comfortable being alone with those books. I think my idea of a perfect day (one of them at least) is a day spent in the presence of so many books. (One thing I love about our home are our libraries; we have a library upstairs, bookshelves at the head of the stairs, and overflowing bookshelves in each one of our bedrooms. =) If I could have sat in one of the benches in- the bookstore and read to my heart's content for a few hours... that would have been a little slice of heaven. As it was, I left with quite an armful of books to read on my own time.

I think the only way my experience could have been better would be if I had started reading, not in the car, listening to a jazz station, but back in Bangor, in the sitting area at the back of the house we stayed in, surrounding by windows looking out at the garden beyond, curled up on the couch, wrapped in a blanket with a steaming cup of tea on the coffee table, knowing that when I got done reading, I could walk down the quiet lane to visit the park that stood on the edge of the beach, and read while I watched my adorable brothers play in that heavenly grass, lush from the constant drizzle that sprinkles Northern Ireland. But, life's not quite perfect... we can't have everything can we? =)

What's your idea of a perfect day?

Books.
A day filled with them at a Charles-Dickens' type book store, surrounded by the smells, feels and sights, is truly a little bit heaven. There is nothing that smells quite like an old, antique book when you open its crackling cover, and dust slides off the top. I have an old copy of Les Miserables that I bought at a book sale. It sounds silly... but every so often while reading it, I would lean close to bury my nose in that wonderful smell.... for some reason that book in particular had the ultimate 'old paper essence'.

Now, of course, if I could go to an English castle with a library with shelves so high that I had to climb a ladder to get the book I wanted, and then go sit by the crackling fire in the middle of the room, on an antique mohair-covered sofa, reading an ancient copy of Paradise Lost...... :)

I know what you mean about loving to go on errands with your mom. I'm the same way... I don't care if I never get out of the car, I love it! Anyway...

Here's what I'd really enjoy:

-Not going to work
-I wouldn't mind doing schoolwork, just without the algebra... lol
-A trip to the library to get a really good book ;)
-Spending time with my mom
-NO doctor appointments for my dad :)
-Baking some goodies to enjoy!
-And spending some family discussion time with our Bibles!

Can't think of much else... but I'm sure there's more!

God bless,
~Taylor

Well, you described most of it...a USED bookstore....the only thing that could make that better is having a new baby in my arms while I am doing it...
Sounds like a great time!

My idea of a perfect day? Not completely sure...
Maybe,
Making things in the kitchen and reading with Mom.
Doing things outside with my brothers and dad.
No Math. :)
Movie-making with my siblings.
Tea and hot chocolate on a cold day.
Family worship
Any adventure that comes with having animals! :)

It depends I guess. I just feel so blessed to have such a wonderful family to spend my days with, perfect or not!

God Bless,

Kelsey

A day filled with wonderful old books! I'll be curled up on a brown leather armchair, with a fire crackling in the fireplace with the light bouncing on the bookcases that are surrounding me. I'll have stacks of books around me that cover many subjects, history, biographies, historical novels, poetry, medical history, mystery stories, etc. On the side table next to me would be a leather notebook for jotting down inspiring quotes and a cup of Chai tea. :) This is my dream day.

Hi Jasmine! I've been a big fan of your site for several months now, and my husband and I enjoy your father's sermons and teaching! It's great to know you're not just Family, you're neighbors! (We live a few hours' drive north of y'all!)

Well ya asked a question, and gotta answer it! :-) So here's my "just-about-perfect-on-this-side-of-Heaven" kind of day:

Wake up well-rested, look over at my husband, remember to praise God for bringing us together--and especially, for bringing us to Him!
Turn my head to look at the other end of the room, and watch my adorable 11-month-old daughter's sparkling blue eyes smiling back at me through the slats of her crib.
Hear the enthusiastic thumping of my 7 year old son bouncing up the stairs, loudly asking what's for breakfast.
Have a delicious breakfast, surrounded by my family, discussing the wonderful blessings our Savior has brought to us today!
Head out to a local park with the kids and spend the day enjoying God's creation in all its variety and majesty. Maybe playing by the side of Inks Lake, or watching my son and my husband scramble up Enchanted Rock while me and my daughter explore the woods together.
Have a fun picnic together, with a Bible study. Hopefully people will notice and ask us questions, and we can spread the Gospel!
Come back home after watching a beautiful sunset, tuck the kids into bed, and spend the rest of the evening with Hubby talking about our walk with God together. Pray together before bedtime, and drift off to sleep filled with joy at knowing that this is only the tiniest taste of the sweet bliss that awaits us when we are finally in the arms of Christ. :-)

Well, you made it sound so wonderful...it made me relax just reading this post!

Perfect day? Probably taking a year off in Germany and living in the top flat we stayed in; then just traveling around in the train and drinking good coffee in cafes.
Then going to visit you in your perfect day :)

Well I think it's kind it's kind of interesting that some people said that no math would help make a day more perfect. It's just that a few months, or a year ago I probably would have said the same thing. But I have decided that I almost like math (not that I want to be a rocket scientist or any thing) but i don't hate it any more.

But the coolest thing that we (me & my bristers) might do is: We find a secret passage way, ether in our house or some other place, and we explore it and it's all dusty an and has a bunch of old cob webs and it's all dark and after exploring a long time we find something that is really awesome and cool.
Not like it could ever happen but I can dream can't I? =)

But every day is usually pretty good, though some days are more stressful than others. I'd like to be thankful no matter what the day is like!

Hmmm...I would have to say my perfect day would include:
Solving a mystery and finding a million dollars with a snazzily-dressed Cary Grant while wearing crisp colored suits and sporting a beehive. :) (think Audrey Hepburn in "Charade"--a personal favorite)
But since I was born 50 years too late for that:
Shopping, shopping, and shopping (including an antique bookstore) and then curling up in my room while the moon is shining and reading Emily Dickinson. :)

Well, except for the Northern Ireland part (I've simply never been there), almost exactly like yours. I always say, books and a good cup of coffee, that's my idea of heaven.

My mom used to tell me that I was going to be old, poor, and surrounded by books...and I wasn't the least bit bothered by that! In fact, I laughed at the description of your house and all the books. Minus the library part, we have at least one bookcase in every room (including the baby's) and in some rooms multiples ;-) Now, if I just had more time to read....

Blessings,
Corrie

I agree with Adelphay, however, I'm the kind who really does like math (*sheepishly grins*). No, really, math's my favorite subject. (I'm not on the trail of becoming a rocket scientist or any thing either, but maybe one of my (Lord willing) future sons will.)
SO with that said... My idea of the perfect day would be a day spent with my church family eating, playing, chatting, and fellowship. Then in the afternoon have my dad pull me aside and tell me that a so-and-so would love to court me, and he be the one I'd been considering marring! Then I'd spend the rest of the day talking to him as my hopefully future husband:)
Then I'd go home walking on the clouds and read some Sherlock Holmes in bed while drinking hot cocoa.(I know that's a totally unromantic way to end, but I LOVE Sherlock and had to include him somewhere:)
Well Jasmine, God bless and keep up the great blogging!

I'm always disappointed when I wander into a bookstore only to discover they sell NEW books...who wants new? Used, marked, yellowed, signed--loved books are enchanting!
My perfect day...sleeping in, hugs from my brother, reading a book, walking on the beach, playing my violin, writing poetry, spending time alone with God outside, watching a good movie with my family. What could be better?

Ah, sounds just lovely! I would like to be curled up in arm chair, reading my favorite book or writing, in front of a crackling stone fireplace, tucked in with a warm plaid blanket. Snow outside on the ground and gently falling from the sky. Mountains in the distance, and- if he or she is calm- a cute and cuddly puppy at my feet. Throw in a cup of hot coca, and oh I wish it was real.

Jasmine,
I just wanted to say what a wonderful writer you are! Your words are a joy to read, whatever you write, they flow so smoothly and descriptively. You definitely have a talent for writing that is not always seen in online bloggers! You could write a book and publish it! I always enjoy your postings.

I loved reading this Jasmine! What a lovely day and story =)

Mine might be...a very good amount of sleep. Having an open ended amount of time for meditation. Family time. Getting dressed nicely. Baking or sewing, singing and burning candles. Time on the water to think, or a walk in beautiful weather. Surprise, impossible rain in Dubai in late afternoon. That especially would be ideal!
I look forward to hearing about the books you got =)

(And. I have NEWS.)

with love;
Cait

Jasmine,

This was quite a lovely post, and I enjoyed reading it very much. It reminded me of a short chapter in a story book or novel.

My idea of a perfect day?

- When I have "down-time" from regular household chores, I like to curl-up in bed with some books and read.

- Baking cookies for my husband (I LOVE the smell of fresh cookies baking in the house :).

- When my husband comes home (with food in hand) to have lunch with me at home in the middle of the day (sometimes, he even has flowers :).

- When I get the chance, I like to take walks early in the morning around my neighborhood while listening to music on my portable compact disc player.

- When I try a new recipe, and it turns out "perfect!"

That's all I can think of at the moment.

Hello Jasmine!
Hmm... a perfect day...
1) Have time to read
2) Be able to get a canvas out and paint
3) be able to hold a newborn
and 4) get to be with my family all day and my Dad not have to go to work!
Loved your post! It sounds like we have so much in common. ( like loving to read!) :)

Okay, seriously. I know you live in houston. I live in east texas. But it certainly sounds like we were in the same store. My mom and I went to an old shop downtown that's full of old, musty smelling books. When ever we go it feels like heaven on earth. (I know that you know exactly what I mean)

Anyway, to answer you're question. Well... you pretty much answered it for me. Except, I'd have a kitten or two in my lap. ;-)

Oh and please, please, if at all possible, put up a pic of your home library. I'd LOVE to see it. "It's not tidy." you say? Don't care. The messier, the better. It just goes to show that you use it. ;-)

Wow, you're right, couldn't have much more of a perfect day. I too love second-hand book stores. =)

well Jasmine, Faith and I just have a perfect day. We visited TODAY our little antique store downtown. Beutiful tea cups, perfectly ironed old linen dollies and wonderful old bookcases full of "sweet smelly" old books. We even found an old Austen Pride and Sense both in one volume. It's ours now. ;-)
Love, Marta
